(no subject) [Feb. 7th, 2009|11:54 pm]
It's been quite some time since I last made a post. Life has gotten a lot busier and more structured this new year. I've got a job now, which, after a pretty relaxed university life, makes for quite a difference. Long hours of both working and travelling to and from work take up most of the days now. It has had a profound effect on my sleeping habits, nowadays I'm up at six in the morning.

The job itself is pretty fun for now, as a game programmer for a game company. I always wanted to do something in the gaming industry and this is truly a good start to do so. Most functions require at least two years of experience, so for me, with no experience in a professional setting it's a great opportunity. Salary could be more, but it's not like I'm scraping the bottom right now.

I've been reading a lot more since starting the job, as I spend a few hours in the train each day. At some point I think I'm going to buy a small laptop so I could do some writing on the train. I miss that the most I think, not being able to write at any time I want to.

The only time for that now is at night when I'm tired from a long day. I'm trying to get to a schedule of writing at least 800 words a day, but so far I'm not making it every day yet. Got to try  harder, I'm getting close to finishing the first draft of the story I started for NaNoWriMo 2008.

End of NaNoWriMo [Nov. 30th, 2008|08:58 pm]
[music |Kurumi Enomoto - Bouken Suisei]

The end of my first NaNoWriMo is finally here. Still have a few more hours in which I could write, since the story isn't finished yet, but I've landed 50,180 words and I feel done for the night.

It was a pretty interesting experience to write as much as possible as soon as possible, and there is still a lot of editing to do before what I have (which is about halfway of the story) is actually presentable.

But for now, I've won, and I'm happy.

NaNo and DnD weekend [Nov. 3rd, 2008|12:11 am]
[Tags|]
[music |Within Temptation - The Cross]

Well, my first NaNo weekend is over and I managed to write a grand total of 3637 words. Most of them were from Saturday. As I expected the D&D session I DM’ed today took most of the morning and all of the afternoon – when we were done it was dinner time. And it left me pretty drained. It was worth it though, we had a lot of fun, one of the characters finally got a near brush with death, and the mystery for the players deepens.

NaNoWriMo [Nov. 1st, 2008|01:49 am]
[Tags|]

I've been thinking about doing this for several years now, but as each year came and went I never did. Well, I'm doing it this year and with high hopes of finishing. There are several original story ideas floating around in my head, and I figure this is as good a time as any to get some of that actually written down.

For my first NaNo story I’m going to write a fantasy story tentatively called “The Demon Rose”. The original idea was formed brainstorming a few months ago while accompanying my father as he drove my younger brother to a friend to go clubbing. Due to incredibly bad planning and idiocy on their parts (my brother and friend) the whole thing took three hours.

Not exactly what I signed up for, but got some good ideas written down and spent some time with my father (busy as we both are those times are getting fewer and farther between), as we took great enjoyment (at least I did) ragging on the whole delay.

Now that has evolved into the current plot, which I won’t go into here.

For the first hour or so of November, getting a good start in the dead of night, I wrote 1527 words. That’s a good portion of the necessary writing quota for Saturday. I’m trying for a good head-start, because Sunday is going to be a busy day DMing a D&D session for a group of friends.

It's hard to believe it’s been six years since I started working on this – I certainly hadn’t intended for it to take so long. For those reading since the beginning, I applaud your resilience. And to all readers, thank you for reading and I hope it was enjoyable.

Boat Fair [Sep. 27th, 2008|11:34 pm]

Man, I’m tired and my legs ache, probably for days to come. Most of the morning and all of the afternoon I helped my father out manning the Hendrick Hamel booth at the boat fair where I live.

I was expecting a boring and wasted day, but one I was willing to waste for my dad, but it turned out to be a pretty fun day. Exhausting, but fun. I had my short story about Hendrick Hamel which I got to tell to a lot of people who were interested in who Hamel was (while also passing out free, and specially made, cookies (I think it was mostly the cookies that did it (yay for nested parentheses))) and it was so busy I didn’t get to sit down, or eat, or drink, all day.

Graduation [Sep. 4th, 2008|11:27 pm]

Today was a big milestone in my life, the graduation ceremony for my Master’s degree. Good ceremony (no surprises there, I’ve visited a few and they’re all the same) and a nice speech from my thesis supervisor.

In a remarkable coincidence (something so improbable as to be next to impossible) two others who got their diplomas were from the same street I’m from. That was a surprise.

End of an Era [Jul. 15th, 2008|11:54 pm]
Today I had my final presentation, defending my thesis. The presentation went well and the final grade was good. It was the last thing I had to do to graduate for my Master’s degree. I won’t receive the diploma until the next ceremony, in the first week of September, but the work is finally done.

Perhaps it’s because I’m tired after what was a pretty long day (several long days in fact), but I don’t know exactly how to feel about this. I’m happy, naturally, but I’ve been swamped with work for so long now it’s odd suddenly being without such a laden schedule – almost unnatural.

What I remember from actual vacations is that it takes at least a few days to adjust again to a more relaxed schedule without feeling that I should be doing something.

Next task, find a job (and have a few weeks of vacation, the first vacation in over one and a half year).

Crap and Diablo [Jun. 29th, 2008|11:39 pm]
[music |Takeda Hana - Kakusei]

Finally got myself to do some ordering of random files on my harddrive. Man, I've collected a lot of crap over the years that, after a single glance, were just left wherever out of my normal ordering. Lots of small files, but small can quickly become humongous if left unchecked.

Also, Blizzard has announced Diablo 3 - a game, in my opinion, which is long overdue. I remember playing Diablo 2 for well over a year, doing multiplayer with a friend, trying out multiple builds for all characters. The cinematic trailer and gameplay trailer are quite impressive. When it's released I have little doubt I'm going to enjoy it just as much as Diablo 2. I just love Blizzard games.

Good Times [Jun. 25th, 2008|06:11 pm]
[mood | happy]

Heard from my supervisor today that he approves my thesis – the second to last hurdle before graduation. He still wants to discuss it in person one more time, so I expect to have to do some small revisions (typos, perhaps some wording here and there) but that’s nothing after months and months of hard work. Now all I’ve got to do is give a presentation about it somewhere in the next few weeks and I’m done in time for the September graduation. Then I’ll no longer be student. Soon I’ll have a real job; hard to imagine still.

In other news I’ve finally worked through the writer’s block I’ve had for a section in my original story that’s been keeping me bogged down for a while now. It just wasn’t working for me. Just days ago I was thinking how the story sucked and I should drop it. But I’m enthused again, so that’s great too.

After months of working to prick a date for the next meeting of my group of friends I D&D with that’s also resolved. We’re playing in my campaign since the beginning of the year, give or take, but we’re only two sessions in. I’ve got so much in store for them, but they’re only still in the first dungeon :)

In the last week I’ve made some modifications to my 3D workflow, which won’t go into effect until the next character (I’m thinking of doing an environment first), but which should enhance the texturing process immensely.

All in all, a good day today.

Birthday [May. 30th, 2008|07:56 pm]

A new day and suddenly I’m twenty-five years old and nearing graduation (okay, two or so more months before graduation, but still). A wholly different year awaits, but before that, a party. Tomorrow I’ll be celebrating my birthday with friends and family. Good times.

GUI building [May. 4th, 2008|12:03 am]
One of the things I really hated doing when making Java programs for university assignments was building a user interface, simply because it is so tedious. Now, the good thing about it was that I knew Java quite well so building a GUI was neither difficult, nor a mystery. Just tedious in writing some code, checking if the layout looks right, etc.

Which brings me to this making the interface for my final university program, which is written in C++.  I have no experience making a GUI in C++. I know of some friends that they used wxWidgets for their interfaces. What’s great about it, to me, is that there is a WYSIWYG editor for it.

It’s still annoying, but the editor speeds up the layout creation. With the first tabular pane done I’ve tested integration with the rest of my program. Now it’s just a matter of figuring out a file dialog, finishing the remainder of the layout and creating the button events. Easy, but time consuming and thus annoying.

Another chapter done, only three (and an epilogue) to go, and thank heavens for that.  Every time I use it  ff.net  becomes more and more annoying.

From the front page:

We do not support dash or other character based section/scene markers. If you wish to create a separation in your chapter, please use the officially supported horizontal line feature in our document editor or in your favorite word program. Using unsupported section markers will only make your entries less compatible to future upgrades. You can create the horizontal lines in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice by typing 3 or 4 consecutive dash/hyphen keys and then hitting enter. The site will correctly recognize these scene breakers when you upload them.

I've high-lighted the significant parts. I use horizontal lines as scene breaks, and have since ff.net first started screwing with supported formats and the like. I create them in Word, and they are supposed to be supported. Then why  does the document manager still eat them, forcing me to  search through large blobs of text with no significant difference between a new line and a new paragraph and put in the document manager lines?

From the Document manager: Note: Always double space between paragraphs. Otherwise, text will be bunched together when displayed.

That's not exactly true either, is it ff.net? Double spaces between paragraphs get eaten too.

Ugh, every upgrade only makes the site worse. I'm seriously given thought to stop using it when Legendary Tamer is finished.

Destruction of scene breaks [Mar. 26th, 2008|12:35 am]
[mood | annoyed]

Great, ff.net – in its ever pervasive attempts at improvement – has once again updated the acceptable contents of documents.

While I do get that they want things to look as professional as can be and cut down or do away with smiley-faces in chapters or other strange character sequences you will never find in a book, their handling of the situation makes things worse. Every time they update, it would seem.

This time it’s just about all scene breaks other than a horizontal line. Fortunately I’ve been using horizontal lines as breaks since 2005, and most of my stories are dated after that. However, one of them – my first and still ongoing – has many chapters I posted before switching to horizontal lines. In fact I changed it because ff.net was starting with their annoying updates that screwed with just about everything.

Poor Legendary Tamer, a single glance at the early chapters revealed the worst possible outcome. My entire formatting for those chapters is gone, completely. I’d have to go over all of them again and fix it.

As if I don’t have enough on my plate as it is. Thanks ff.net.
